Taijiquan (Tai Chi Ch’uan) is a martial art that originated in China over one thousand years ago and was primarily taught for self defence purposes.
The central part of the Taiji system is it’s form, consisting of many postures linked together in continuous flowing circular movements. This encourages the flow of life-force energy, or Chi, throughout the body, along the acupuncture meridians which encourages the body to heal and rejuvenate itself over a period of time.
Taiji is sometimes referred to, as a soft style, meaning that the practitioners, hold no physical or mental tension in their bodies. This allows for greater ease of movement and improved circulation of blood and energy through out the whole body. This in turn produces a state of relaxation and calm. For these reasons alone, many people find Taiji as an attractive form of stress relief. However, one should not mistake these soft movements as a sign of weakness or passivity!
Each posture has a specific martial application which is also linked to one of the acupuncture meridians. The movements are dynamic and resilient, both slow and quick and encourage decisiveness and confidence.
Each move generates, both, centripetal and centrifugal forces, which encourages the flow of blood and energy from the centre of the body, out to the extremities and back, thus, improving circulation without straining the heart. When practiced daily, the flow of Energy through all the acupuncture meridians can be increased, people with poor health become stronger, angry temperaments calmer, and anxiousness turns to confidence.
In addition to balance, Taiji is also about change. Learning to deal with change as you go from one posture to another during form, or the spontaneous and instant changes reflected during the many two person exercises such as San –Sau, Push Hands, Da-lu or Pauchui, which teach you the importance of relaxing so that movements are both economical and effective.
Tai Chi has been proven to help with; High Blood Pressure, Circulation, Mental Health, Posture, Flexibility, Bone Density, Concentration, Balance and muscle Tone.
